LCEVC Encoder
Unique enhancement standard as the perfect complement to MainConcept AVC, HEVC & VVC encoders
MPEG-5 Part 2 LCEVC (Low Complexity Enhancement Video Coding) was standardized by the MPEG and ISO consortiums and published as ISO/IEC 23094-2, with V-Nova being the primary development and contributions to the standard. LCEVC is an enhancement codec that works with MainConcept AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265 and VVC/H.266 video encoders as its base layers. LCEVC provides better quality, higher resolutions and reduced complexity for a significantly increased overall quality-of-experience.
The LCEVC data for the enhancement layer is carried as SEI messages within the base layer or as a separate stream (dual track). An LCEVC aware decoder uses the information to improve the base layer when scaling it back to the original resolution resulting in various benefits like lower cost encoding and reduced bitrates (average 20% of the total bitrate). the standard is backward compliant with software or hardware that does not yet support the LCEVC enhancement layer. LCEVC is the perfect match for live sports and beyond.

Product Highlights
- Support for the industry-leading base codecs from MainConcept
MPEG-5 LCEVC is deployed as an enhancement to existing and next-generation codecs working together with MainConcept AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265 and VVC/H.266 video encoders as its base layers. - New heights for high-efficiency video encoding
Brings a meaningful reduction of encoding complexity, minimizing bitrates for the same quality by up to 40%, resulting in a significant compression efficiency and enormous cost savings for processing, storage and bandwidth.
- Backward compliance, even with legacy CE devices
The AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265 and VVC/H.266 base layers ensure that LCEVC content is able to playback on set-top boxes, TV sets, mobile devices and legacy devices that do not support LCEVC. - Suitable for both OTT streaming & TV broadcast scenarios
The MainConcept LCEVC Encoder SDKs generate and package HLS (SEI) and MPEG-DASH (SEI & dual track) compatible content for VoD or live OTT streaming. The packages can also be deployed for OTA broadcast using MPEG-2 Transport Streams for TV 2.5 and DTV+ (TV 3.0) production approved by Brazil’s SBTVD Forum.

Increasing market penetration
Chip manufacturers regularly add decoder IP cores to their SoC (System-on-a-Chip) processors used in set-top boxes, TV sets, and mobile devices for real-time LCEVC hardware playback.
For software playback, reference players are available for different platforms and operating systems such as Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and HTML5. Reference players available today include Shaka Player, ExoPlayer, VLCKit, HLS.js, dash.js, video.jsand THEOplayer.
Enhancement codec for next-gen broadcast formats
LCEVC is a mandatory format for next-gen broadcast delivery in Brazil. Standardized as DTV+ (formerly known as TV 3.0) by SBTVD (Sistema Brasileiro de TV Digital Terrestre) Forum, Brazil is the first country to deploy VVC/H.266 as a base layer with LCEVC. As an interim step while hardware adoption builds, the Forum defined TV 2.5 as an intermediate standard, including LCEVC as an enhancement with AVC/H.264 as the base layer. Other global standardization groups are considering LCEVC too.
